Decolonizing Ethnographic Film Archives

This research initiative addresses the highly contested space of ethnographic film archives held in European institutions. It critically analyzes access protocols, archival restrictions, and the inherent power dynamics of historical footage.
Igor Karim is a panelist for the World Anthropological Union Congress 2025 on this topic, contributing to discussions on archive access, contemporary uses of archival film, and the contribution of decolonial efforts to new anthropological debates.
He also organized an online workshop titled 'Re-activating old film reels' at the Institute for Theater, Film and Media Studies, examining new methodological approaches for archive remediation.
